SUMMARY:The Civic Mindset: Turning Hot Topics into Student Success
DESCRIPTION:Local and national elections represent important moments in American life. Even in courses where politics don’t typically enter the classroom\, all students are living in an ecosystem that is affected when an important election is happening. Rather than shying away from the moment\, we can use these opportunities to model how to discuss and teach hot topics. In this session\, we will address how best to facilitate classroom learning on topics that have the potential to create “hot moments” in the classroom.  \nDon’t miss this opportunity to learn directly from Leah A. Murray\, Ph.D\, how she handles hot topics in the classroom. Sign up now!  \nAbout Dr. Murray: \nLeah Murray is the Brady Presidential Distinguished Professor in the Department of Political Science and Philosophy at Weber State University\, a recipient of the Barbara Burch Award for Faculty Leadership in Civic Engagement and was recognized as the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Endowed Professor for 2017 – 2020. She currently serves as the Director of the Olene S. Walker Institute of Politics & Public Service\, for which she leads Weber State Votes\, the campus’s student voter engagement effort\, which has earned numerous recognitions. Murray holds a BA from Syracuse University and a Ph.D. from the University at Albany and is the author or co-author of 2 books\, 12 journal articles and book chapters.
